About the Journal

Focus and Scope

Ktisis - Journal of Late Antique Housing focuses on exploring late antique dwellings in the Mediterranean region, adopting a multidisciplinary approach that encompasses archaeological, architectural, textual, historical and sociocultural analyses. It delves into the complexities of late antique housing, examining not only structural aspects but also the symbolic meanings embedded in decorative elements and their broader social implications.

The journal has a strong partnership with CISEM (Centro interuniversitario di studi sull’edilizia abitativa nel Mediterraneo), which has been hosted within the University of Bologna's Dipartimento di Storia Cultura e Civilltà since 2018. CISEM serves as a focal point for scholars and researchers interested in late antique housing, fostering collaborative research efforts and facilitating the dissemination of scholarly findings.

Contributions to Ktisis undergo rigorous peer review process and are published in Italian, English, French, German, Modern Greek, and Spanish, ensuring accessibility to a global audience of scholars and researchers interested in late antique studies, history of architecture, and Mediterranean archaeology.

Section Policies

Ktisis invites submissions spanning diverse disciplines, encouraging interdisciplinary and reception studies. Papers must offer novel insights into the Late Antique housing, fostering dialogue and further research.

Articles

Articles focusing primarily on Late Antique dwelling are welcome. The Editors consider research papers up to 15,000 words, including notes. Longer submissions are accepted only in exceptional cases, after prior discussion with the Editors. Papers should be well-structured, presenting clear arguments with broader significance and accessible to non-specialists. English fluency is expected. The Journal doesn't reprint previously published material or accept papers under consideration elsewhere.

Submissions should be emailed to the Editors in Word format. Contributors must adhere to detailed formatting and style instructions.

The articles will be subjected to the peer review process described in the following section.

Reviews

Additionally, Ktisis publishes Review Articles highlighting recent advancements and reviews of significant new publications in various scholarly languages. Submissions should be emailed to the Editors in Word format. Contributors must adhere to detailed formatting and style instructions. The reviews will not be subjected to the peer review process but to the judgment and control of the Editors and the Editorial board.

Peer Review Process

Authors wishing to contribute to the Journal with their own writing, in the form of an article or review, must send an abstract detailing the topic in English to the journal principal contact (approximately 150 words). If the theme is deemed consistent with the Journal's objectives by the Editors-in-chief, the author must then submit the complete article, including text, bibliography, figures, and captions. The texts can be provided in Italian, English, French, German, Modern Greek, and Spanish.

Submissions undergo review by two referees who are specialists in the field, with at least one being a member of the Scientific Committee. To maintain impartiality, submissions are sent to reviewers anonymously. To facilitate this, authors need to ensure that manuscripts are prepared in a way that does not give away their identity. While the reviewing process may take time, authors typically receive a decision within three months. Detailed feedback is provided to authors for potential revisions before final acceptance.

Publication Frequency

Ktisis is an annual journal. The journal is updated regularly during the year so to offer an up-to-date overview of the research outcome, and at the end of each year an annual digital volume is compiled, encompassing all the articles published online throughout the year.
